Start-Up to Connect Home Appliances | Big Data - let your data grow | Scoop.it

One of Silicon Valley’s favorite buzz phrases is “Internet of things,” a catchall foreveryday stufflike home appliances and light bulbs that are connected to the Internet. Nest Labs, a company founded by a former Apple executive that makes a smart thermostat, has brought cachet to the category and gotten a lot of other manufacturers thinking about how they can bring the Internet to their otherwise humdrum products.

Tomáš Kuzár's insight:

Internet of things is reaching us. Currently chip for connecting your home appliance to the internet costs about 10 dollars. Promising ...

How Big Data Is Playing Recruiter for Specialized Workers

How Big Data Is Playing Recruiter for Specialized Workers | Big Data - let your data grow | Scoop.it

WHEN the e-mail came out of the blue last summer, offering a shot as a programmer at a San Francisco start-up, Jade Dominguez, 26, was living off credit card debt in a rental in South Pasadena, Calif., while he taught himself programming. He had been an average student in high school and hadn’t bothered with college, but someone, somewhere out there in the cloud, thought that he might be brilliant, or at least a diamond in the rough.

Tomáš Kuzár's insight:

Nice story for evening reading about using data for search of talents. Talented programmers share lot of data onlike: social network statuses, GitHub submits, Linkedin references - usefull data for building a database of talented people. Automated hiring based on data and algorithms maybe will not work, but idea itself is interesting.

Tomáš Kuzár's insight:

I agree with the author: "Essentially, it’s become fairly obvious that cloud is a commodity, and the cheapest provider will win. The question is, can companies maintain excellent service levels while cutting pricing to the bone." But it seems that cloud is the right direction of data processing.

5 Tips for Finding Talent for Your Data Analytics Team

As an increasing number of enterprises seek to leverage big data, the demand for data analysts continues to grow. Coupled with the well-publicized dearth of data analytics talent – a McKinsey report from two years ago predicts that by 2018 there will be a shortage of up to 190,000 data scientists and 1.5 million managers and analysts capable of interpreting data – this rising demand makes filling analytics positions extremely challenging for enterprises.

Big Data for targeted marketing campaigns

In 2008, software engineer Vidur Dhanda was consulting on a risk management project on Wall Street when he noticed a fundamental problem: Even the country’s biggest lenders, in the midst of the financial crisis, did not have good data on the health of America’s small and midsize businesses.

Tomáš Kuzár's insight:

For many people is Big Data a synonym for big companies. But also small company can take advantage of new technology. I was impressed by OneQube, which uses personal social network profiles in order to improve targeted marketing campaigns. In this case you can build an algorithm on very small amount of data and scale it afterwards.

Don't Throw That Out! LeanPath Harnesses Data to Fight Food Waste

Don't Throw That Out! LeanPath Harnesses Data to Fight Food Waste | Big Data - let your data grow | Scoop.it

Standing in a prep area below one of four dining halls at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, dinner service is nearing. But chef Anthony Jung isn’t preparing food; he’s measuring it. Amid racks of trays with marinating flank steak and just-grilled chicken thighs, Jung taps a few buttons on a small digital screen attached to a scale to learn the value of the squash he’s about to discard. He’s pleased the tally for the trimmings from the 70 pounds of “Sautéed Squash Blend” he’ll serve this evening is miniscule: just 30 cents.

Tomáš Kuzár's insight:

No rocket science! Just measure what are you throwing out. Measure, analyse and generate less waste.

Internet of Everything | Retail & Consumers

Internet of Everything | Retail & Consumers | Big Data - let your data grow | Scoop.it

Looking back today that period of retail evolution seems like molasses in January compared to what we’re witnessing now. With smartphones, broadband, tablets, embedded sensors, and all the other stuff bathing the world in Internet connectivity, we are watching the retail industry fell giants and create new ones in weeks and months instead of years. The smart ones who adopt technology and adapt to the realities of this hyper-market have a bright future. Those who fail to do so can probably expect a quick end.

Tomáš Kuzár's insight:

Generally I like concept of Internet of Everything. But I am not happy with retail ideas focusing on increasing sales: people do not need always to buy something. I would rather change the direction: how to sell what consumers really need to live better lives, how to produce less garbage, how to increate effectivity of distrubution channels for energy saving, etc.

Big Data, Big Hype, Big Danger

Big Data, Big Hype, Big Danger | Big Data - let your data grow | Scoop.it

A remarkable thing happened in Big Data last week. One of Big Data’s best friends poked fun at one of its cornerstones: the Three V’s. The well-networked and alert observer Shawn Rogers, vice president of research at Enterprise Management Associates, tweeted his eight V’s: “…Vast, Volumes of Vigorously, Verified, Vexingly Variable Verbose yet Valuable Visualized high Velocity Data.” He was quick to explain to me that this is no comment on Gartner analyst Doug Laney’s three-V definition. Shawn’s just tired of people getting stuck on V’s.

Tomáš Kuzár's insight:

Probably it is not surprising that Big Data is considered as a Big Hype: "Blogs and articles yammer on with the benefits of “big data” when in fact they’re repeating promises made years ago about the benefits of small data and small analytics."

Big Data Leads To Big IT Challenges. If Cisco's study made one thing clear, it's that big data represents just as a big a technical challenge for organizations as it does an opportunity for competitive advantage. Approximately 27 percent of respondents said big data opens up security and risk management challenges, while 16 percent said they lack the budget to implement a big data strategy at all. What's more, 14 percent of survey participants said they lack the time to properly study big data, and 13 percent said they lack the IT staff to kick-start a big data initiative.
